French term or phrase: alors que
This is from an interview with a professional pop singer.

I want to be sure of the meaning of alors que in this context, because if it means something like "while," "although" or "whereas," then the sentence could be interpreted as incomplete. Perhaps whereas means "but" in this context?

By contrast (here)
Explanation:
it really does mean "whereas" but you could use the above instead.

Johnny and I, by contrast, we had lousy musicians and lousy sound technicians.

You could also say : Unlike those greats, we came off badly with our poor musicians and bad quality recordings.

It's only spoken language so not always grammatically perfect

agree  Tony M: In fact, 'while' is all it really needs... it is informal transcribed speech, after all.

whereas

Explanation:
Seems straightforward use here in contrasting the experiences of the two sets of singers.
