半導体と比べても産業の裾野が広い自動車産業は、九州の新しい基幹産業になってきた。クルマ一台に使われる部品はおよそ三万個といわれる。その部品を九州の各自動車工場はどう調達するのか。日産もトヨタも関東、東海地域というそれぞれのホームグラウンドに系列の部品メーカーをかかえていたから、取引の急変を避けるために専用船や陸送によって部品を運ぶことを基本方針としている。しかし将来のことを考えて部品メーカーも次第に九州に生産拠点を移し始めてきているし、また九州の地場の部品メーカーがあらたに取引を始めるというケースも増えている。
　九州通産局の試算では、自動車関連産業の九州経済への波及効果は年間三兆円あまり、１２万人の雇用を創出するとしている。これは半導体産業のおよそ２倍で鉄鋼業に匹敵する産業規模であることを示している。まさに九州の次代を担う産業と呼ぶにふさわしいものがある。

Car Island: Kyushu

The automobile industry, which has a wider industrial base than semiconductors, is becoming a new core business for Kyushu. It is said that about 30 thousand parts are used in one automobile. How does each automobile maker in Kyushu get these parts? Nissan and Toyota have formed industrial groups of parts manufacturers in their home grounds, i.e. the Kanto and Toukai regions, and so their fundamental policy is to ship automobile parts via special vessels or transport them by land, in order not to abruptly change their business transactions. However, the parts manufacturers are gradually relocating their production footholds to Kyushu for the future, and there are an increasing number of cases in which local parts makers in Kyushu have started to deal with automobile makers.
According to an estimate by the Kyushu Bureau of Economy, Trade, and Industry, the ripple effect of the automobile industry will reach 3 trillion yen or so per year, and produce new employment amounting to 120 thousand jobs. This effect is about two times that of the semiconductor industry, and comparable to that of the steel industry. Therefore, we can recognize the automobile industry as Kyushu’s next generation industry.
