Having subscribed to a sort of mobile internet, I don't have to keep my PC unnecessarily on. That service made me reachable whenever my clients need me. Whenever a new email gets in my inbox, my mobile notifies me at once, and I can answer the emails via my mobile. Thanks Nokia and Germanos!

Same here. Thanks to technology I can enjoy time with my family during weekends and holidays without spending unnecessary time in front of my PC checking for emails. Besides that my PC also deserves some time off =oD.

- otherwise a meltdown is in the offing. I've recently moved (obliged by circumstances) from a cool country villa back into the city to a smaller, hot apartment with no air conditioning and the difference is horrendous, especially since I spend long hours over a heat-emitting PC, not to mention the lamp at night which also gives off heat.
I am currently looking for somewhere else but am usually too busy to spend a lot of time doing so.
Anyone in The Valencia area of Spain willing to share the rent of a villa with swimming pool, garden etc can contact me through proz... I'm open to all suggestions

I set it to Hibernation if I'm going to be away for too long. Otherwise, I leave it in Sleep. I occasionally turn it down completely because sometimes it gets to cluttered.
I also use my smartphone to check my emails if I'm not working on my computer.

I voted "other". I generally turn the computer off if I'm away for more than an hour or two. Apart from that it tends to be on when I'm at home (though usually on standby if I'm not using it). I use the computer in my non-working hours, and I sometimes work at the weekend, so it tends to be on most of the time (when I'm at home).

I check my emails during the weekend and holidays. I am in the wrong side of the world. When it's Saturday here, it's Friday in Europe. So, it means still I have to work. Whereas Monday is a busy day in New Zealand with my Kiwi clients.
cheers

But what's meant is "whenever I sleep" - bit shocking indeed.

When I go to sleep. Otherwise, if I'm home - the computer is always on, but that doesn't mean I'm in front of it all the time.

Surely, computers are not simply synonymous with work?
I keep our household accounts on the computer (as well as professional ones),
and I keep track of the bank accounts online.
My husband's group "John and the kids" are selling their CD "As Nature Intended"
through the internet.
We both keep track of the news, international affairs, sientific developments
on the internet. And where else would you buy airline tickets, books and
Christmas presents?
It may be the world's greatest timewaster, but it beats sitting glued to the TV.

I can understand that not everyone requires e.g. their email or PIM application to run all the time.
However, if you do shut down your equipment (or place it in standby or hibernation mode) for the night, please make sure you do not miss important application updates that your software, by default, might look for at night.

My laptop lid gets shut and it hibernates when I'm not in front of it (which some days is pretty much only when I'm sleeping), but we run a distributed application on our desktop that uses volunteer computer processing power to crunch climate control data: www.Climateprediction.net, and so it's powered up pretty much all the time.
I'm pretty wired, in general, so the Internet is my main source of entertainment and a big component of my social life. So just because the computer is on doesn't mean it's all work and no play.

Was there ever a time when I didn't have my computer on all day? It's not that I work all day, it's just that I like to stay on top of emails, have the Internet at the ready, occasionally sit down to play for a little bit... and as someone said, I'm also compelled by the time zone differences to at least check my emails throughout the day.
I do vaguely remember back when I was still on dialup that I used to keep a list next to the computer where I would write down stuff to look up on the Internet when I next connect. What a strange thought that is now.

I think mine is set to look for everything when I turn it on in the mornings as well as continually while it is on.
Otherwise I have no idea why, like me, it takes such ages to start up
I go back and forth from the kitchen drinking coffee and tidying up. All the flickering messages on the screen frighten me if I watch them... But I have to log in at the right point in the procedure.
But once I have had my coffee and the machine has settled down, it works fine!

because I switch my computer off at weekends or after 5 or 6 pm during the week if I have no work. That is than simply my time with family and friends and I don`t want to think about work. So far this has been ok. I don´t often get enquiries during that "off-time" and if they do come in it is usually ok to answer the next morning or Monday.
