Since OS X El Capitan was released to the public last week, Microsoft Office users have noticed some serious bugs when attempting to use the software.

Now, Microsoft and Apple are working on a fix for this:

I have always had issues with MSOffice. The worst one is sudden crashes that cause me to lose all my work (I don't always remember to save frequently).

Before the latest Office for Mac came out I spent a while exploring the "free preview" version, and apart from some annoying changes to the interface I couldn't see what was new. I was hoping they might bring back the old "Find/Replace in all open documents" (which I still use in Office 2008). They didn't.

Is it true that if you install the new Office 2015 it will disable all previous versions?

Nope

I was hoping they might bring back the old "Find/Replace in all open documents" (which I still use in Office 2008).

You can get that feature by adding a macro.

My macro skills don't stretch that far.

I know, Mac users aren't supposed to write macros .

Nevertheless, it takes two steps to add this feature:

  • Find an appropriate macro on the web
  • Copy and paste it in your normal.dotx

If you'd like to assign a keyboard shortcut to the macro, you'd have to perform a third step.

I do use a lot of macros in MSWord to find/replace words I translate frequently.

You're being very tantalising. You point me to a macro (useful - thanks!) but simperingly, suggest there might be more..... how can I persuade you to tell me how to assign a keyboard shortcut to that?

The macro was an example (for a similar task). It's not the one you'll be needing. Either ask for help in a specialised macro or Word:mac forum or have another Google search.

TextWrangler Oct 20, 2015

A few notes;

  • VBA macros found on the Internet, won't always work in Word:mac. In fact, I never found one that did work
  • I mentioned the procedure with TextWrangler some time ago. It does work, but only with CLOSED files
  • If one is a Mac, one doesn't use macros

    Cheers,

    Hans

VBA applications for Mac Oct 22, 2015

  • Yes, that would apply to almost all VBA applications developed for translators, eg. Dave Turner’s CodeZapper, Stanislav Okhvat’s Translator Tools and MetaTexis: they won’t even start in Word for Mac.

The notable exception: Wordfast Classic, compatible with Mac since 2001 (but not with Word 2008 and the latest Word 2016). It was slow until Word 2004, fast (= on par with Word for Windows) with Word 2011.

I'm sorry to hear that Wordfast doesn't work with Word 2016!

Simple macros do work, like a macro to Find and Replace in all open documents. I think that as long as you don't create your own dialogue boxes, that you're safe.

El Capitan & extreme slowness in Wordfast Classic Oct 22, 2015

FWIW, a user reported on the Wordfast list he experienced extreme slowness with Wordfast Classic in Word 2011 (Wordfast Classic doesn’t work with Word 2016) with the initial release of El Capitan. Upgrading to the latest version of El Capitan (10.11) solved that problem.

As of yesterday, the latest version of El Capitan is 10.11.1, with a fix for crashes in Office:mac 2016.

Macros didn't work at all in Word:mac 2008. Because of that mistake, our Redmondian friends gave us dozens of Word/Office Automator actions. For free. To mention a few:
