I studied English and French as a Foreign Language at the Free University of Berlin (Master of Education). I spent a year in Edinburgh, Scotland, and one year in France (six months in Agen and, on a separate occasion, six months in Nantes). I speak English on a daily basis with my partner, and I am immersing myself in Spanish here in Mexico City.
Both in my Bachelor's and my Master's degree I had a strong focus on Linguistics, which has provided me with a sound understanding of the interrelation of the different 'levels' of language (i.e. syntax, semantics, pragmatics), and thus excellent skills for analyzing material within its particular context, which is essential for a good translation. Also, I am meticulous, which is important for translation and transcription.
I got interested in translation early on. Already as a child I compared the different languages on food packaging. Later, as I became proficient in English and French, I got especially interested in the fields of instructions, manuals, web navigation interfaces (software and website localization) and the like, as bad translations of these have always bothered me.
My fields of expertise include linguistics, education, and photography, but I am eager to expand my knowledge beyond these.
