Surprisingly, only one idea here seemed to hold water, and even then, I found the concept of "hyperpolyglots" as explained by the reporting writers rather simplistic. It's like taking a head count of languages and using a faulty denominator. Trawling the web, I found a more reasonable consideration about Romance languages not really counting because they were all closely related.
