As (the Red Army was approaching)
I think you can translate it this way. It is the wrong use of "w swietle" in this context, but I think this is what they meant.

: "w świetle Armii Czerwonej..." - rzeczywiście dziwaczne wyrażenie.

: The suggestion is okay, but they meant something different. The 'light' was of the fact of the Red Army's advance, not of the Red Army itself. That advance cast a new light on the military situation in Warsaw as perceived by the Home Army's leadership.

: Indeed, originally - sounds sort of like the Red Army was shining; so you coped with this perfectly

in the light of (BrE)/in light of (AmE) [the Red Army's advance on the capital]
Pozwoliłem sobie podać propozycję idącą w zupełnie innym kierunku. "Advance" jest tutaj rzeczownikiem, więc łączy się dobrze z "light". Całe wyrażenie jest jednocześnie natywne, zgrabne i bliskie oryginałowi, dlatego będę go bronił. ;)
W brytyjskiej angielszczyźnie używamy raczej "in the light of", w amerykańskiej raczej bez "the".

Całość: The museum was opened on the 60th anniversary of the Uprising's outbreak, and is entirely dedicated to the commemoration of the insurgency of the people of Warsaw against the German occupant, in the light of the Red Army's advance on the capital.
Tło: Decyzja o zrywie podjęta w świetle zbliżania się Armii Czerwonej.
