Types Of Indexes
A price-relative index may be unweighted or weighted and considers prices or values. It is an average of a series of numbers, which are “shown as” percentages or indexes.
An aggregate index may be unweighted or weighted and considers total costs (a basket of goods). It measures a selected group of items whose total cost at a point in time is compared with the total cost in the base period.
Unweighted index considers all components as being of equal importance;
Weighted index does not consider all components as being of equal importance; it is the assigning of importance
