Finnish term

vo:lla

Finnish to English Medical Medical: Health Care
seisoo vo:lla

Pt. with back issues.

I wish Finnish would refrain from using all these abbreviations which are unintelligible to non-natives. "standing" by means of what exactly? In medical report or record.

I think this is a case of the doctor's own shorthand rather than an established abbreviation. "vastaanotto" here in my mind doesn't refer to the reception desk, but rather the doctor's appointment.

I must say, knowing Swedish does make Finnish words somewhat more easily understood: Finnish seems based on the Swedish mottagning or emottagning, no? However, a short "vo" is totally inaccessible for the uninitiated, I'd say. Is that what you'd typically see on signs at an ER in Finland, say?
Tarja Karjalainen Sep 12, 2019:
Without further context (is this a separate sentence or part of assessment and what's around it) it's hard to say, but I think it could be simply "seisoo vastaanotolla", i.e. his back is so sore that he can't sit, but prefers to stand.

vastaanotolla

The patient with his/her back problem is probably waiting to see a doctor or a nurse (in a health center or some such place), so "vo:lla" probably stands for "vastaanotolla".

You really have to do some standing there if you don't have an appointment but just go there because you have a health problem. Thus, "vastaanotto", literally 'reception', is the place you go to to have a health care professional receive (and hopefully help) you.

agree Unni Tengvall-Unadike : Vastaanotolla yes, and the thing about standing might mean that the patient has a hard time sitting due to back problems. My dad once stood for a very long time because back pain only permitted him to stand or lie, not sit!
