Hard to say with little context, but because of the word "seinerseitige" ('on his part'), it is more likely to mean *by Mr X*

If it says in the original German sentence "Ankauf des Bildes von Herrn X", then I would interpret this as "from Mr. X".
In your first sentence, where you use "by", I would retranslate this "by" as "durch" and not as "von".
In the second sentence, it could be either "by" or "from", the sentence alone does not make
