The usual translation – as a countermove – does not seem to fit in here. Possibly "to get over/counter this problem" (time-consuming procedure)?

: also: "as a counter measure" - although the German wording is strange. for the whole phrase (im Gegenzug Anwendung finden): is used as a counter measure/to resolve the problem. The German should read "...findet."

“Im Gegenzug" would usually translate to “in return" or smlr, but quite obviously has inadvertently taken the place of “im Gegensatz dazu” (loosing grip of idiomatics is a common trait among German authors/speakers/technical writers).
In addition, I wouldn’t take for granted that the Bleichtherapie establishes a complete solution to the problem described (i. e. it may have both assets and drawbacks of its own).
