the stratigraphic sequence of the helvetic nappe axis
would be my suggestion.
"Schichtserien" is a stratigraphic sequence and "Decke" is generally a nappe (a type of folded structure). As you are dealing with tunelling this would seem to fit quite well.

What Ariane says (helvetische Axendecke is the name of _one_ specific helvetic alpine nappe) is contradicted by the links posted as reference (*a* Helvetic Alpine nappe (Axen-Decke)). _A_, not _The_, Helvetic Alpine nappe. She even suggests, in her own answer \"a\" and not \"the\". The original German, unfortunately, does not help one way or the other. I\'m still working on it :-)

OK, I\'ve now found a couple of other references. They tell me conclusively that the generic term is \"helvetische Decke\" (helvetic nappe) and that a number of these exist (Axendecke, Drusbergdecke, Wildhorndecke). So Ariane is right, it is the Axendecke, which is a helvetic nappe, or helvetic alpine nappe.

Nun habe ich etwas weiter recherchiert und auch Geo-Kollegen kontaktiert. Hier die endgültige Lösung: Die Axen-Decke ist nach dem Berg \"Axen\" (östl. d. Vierwaldstätter Sees) benannt. D.h. es gibt nur diese Axen-Decke. Also, nix mir Achse, und auch kein \"axis\", sondern Axe :-)
