I'm not sure precisely how to put "zu den Wegen hin ", although I have no problem in understanding what it means:

Um ein unabsichtliches Auslösen des Lichtzaunes durch Besucher oder Mitarbeiter zu vermeiden, wird zu den Wegen hin im Abstand von 1 Meter ein schnell entfernbares Geländer montiert.

My draft translation so far:

An easily removable railing is to be placed 1 meter away from the plant zu den Wegen hin to prevent the light barrier from being triggered inadvertently by visitors or employees.

I'm not happy with "in the direction of the paths" or "towards the paths."

Ah! Hence the confusion. I translated Anlage as plant since the German also refers to "system", but I have since discovered that it realy has to be "Automated Fiber Placement system", not "Automated Fiber Placement plant".

Sorry if I've confused you. My confusion was not knowing what you were referring to with "plant" (I saw plant as meaning either a whole factory site or a whole collection of machinery, and neither seemed to fit here).

That was precisely what I meant by "placed 1 meter away from the plant", which you both seemed to object to. Or did I misunderstand you?

To my ears "at a distance of 1 metre" is meaningless unless you say 1m from what. Can you not say "1 metre from the installation"?

I agree with Brigitte - the Abstand von 1 Meter is from the thing being protected, the Lichtzaun which is being protected from unabsichtliches Auslösen

I think it is pretty certain that "im Abstand von 1 Meter" implies it is from the plant, even though the plant is not explicitly mentioned in the German. I used quotation marks because I was aksing about this phrase rather than the individual words.

Please don't use quotation marks (or remove them for the glossary entry). As I understand this, the railing will be placed between the light barrier and the path - or do I get this wrong? The plant is not mentioned in the German original.

agree Armorel Young : The best of those options is "facing the paths" - we can't really say "along the paths" as we don't know how far back from the path the railing is to be set.
