Johann Gottfried Herder
In dieser kleinen Gesellschaft leben die eigentlichen und ersten Freuden des Vaterlandes wie in einem "Idyllenkreise"; in "Idyllen" leibt und lebt das Land unsrer ersten Jugend.
Hi. I'm not sure about the meaning of "idyll" in this sentence. Is it about an idyllic condition? or it's about the idyll (poem)?
i.e. Is the "idyllic circle (Idyllenkreise)"
1. a set of idylls (poems)
2. a set of idyllic circumstances
Then, does our childhood land lives by such
1. poems
2. circumstances

Idylle is borrowed from Ancient Greek εἰδύλλιον (eidúllion).
I think it has to do with this meaning.
I hope I have helped you.

Example sentence:
He had an idyllic childhood.
an idyllic retreat in the countryside
+1

"Idylls Series" or "Idylls Cycle"
This is probably a reference to Tischbein's drawings.
Discussion
I'm going to agree with Peter, who may want to add this link to his answer:

I cannot recommend this site enough (have known about it for a long time), as it includes several dictionaries that you may have never heard of or come across. It even offers "Herders(!) Conversations Lexikon"--though this one doesn't have the term asked for here (but Goethe's does).
To all, enjoy your weekend
"Haben wir noch das Vaterland der Alten?"
_________________________________________
It's a text about the fatherland. Here Herder is speaking about our first perceptions of it in the small community of our childhood.
This text is translated in the book "Another Philosophy of History and Selected Political Writings" (p. 110):
"It is in this small society that the first and foremost friends
of the fatherland live, as in an idyllic circle; the land of our early
youth lives by just such idylls."
(It seems there's a difference between Freuden and Freunden in Suphan and DKV editions)
