I don't agree with KFL's "meeting place" or "lay-by"
I think it refers to points of convergence?
Ideas welcome.

...or points of convergence, or "social meeting point". Basically a place where people interact socially... few and far between in most of Norway

Social arena may therefore be slightly overreaching.

Perhaps I should add for others’ eyes: IMO: social arena is used in a more narrow sense than what is normally meant by a mere meeting or gathering place, in that, it is a place or venue were the emphasis is on social interaction, has almost a scientific ring to it, is often contrasted to other scientific arenas and usually prefixed by in as in the arena of …
I don\'t see how gatherings is synonymous with meeting places.
