Part I – Cloud Computing Essentials
'Cloud computing' is often treated as one all-embracing concept. In fact, the term encompasses many different things. The purpose of this part of the book is to explain the key technical and commercial characteristics of cloud computing in sufficient detail to enable a non-technical reader to understand the concepts that will underpin the analysis of cloud legal and regulatory issues in the rest of the book. To analyse properly how laws apply to cloud computing, how contractual relationships work in clouds, and how the 'cloud ecosystem' is regulated, it is first necessary to differentiate between the main types of cloud computing services and consider how they work in structural and deployment terms. As will quickly become clear, layering of cloud services is common. Much depends on exactly how an individual service has been set up and implemented, including service layers that may not be obvious to users and may even be hidden deliberately.
In Chapter 1 we outline the main technical and commercial characteristics of cloud computing, including the central concept of 'X as a Service' and various other key elements. Common models for deployment of cloud resources are then described and are put in the broader context of the cloud supply chain. The focus of Chapter 2 is on control, security, and risk in the cloud, including a description of bow the so-called 'CIA Triad' (Confidentiality, Integrity, and Availability) works in cloud computing environments. The chapter also explains how cloud computing differs from traditional outsourcing arrangements and provides an overview of typical contractual structures for cloud services.
