German term
Erkenntnisinteresse
German to English
Social Sciences
Philosophy
theory
Not much context, except that sociological theories and their "Erkenntnisinteresse" are concerned. So what is NOT intended here is something like "thirst for/interest in knowledge".
Any ideas? Many thanks!

aim of the inquiry
Difficult to judge without further context, but "Erkenntnisinteresse" is often just a scientific synonym for "Zielsetzung".
.... sociological theories and the aims of their proponents ...
.... sociological theories and the aims of the inquiries that led to them ...

I like Millay's suggestion, maybe something like
.... sociological theories and the scientific agendas of their proponents ....

Even the minimal context is better than none. So, for
"Theorie, Erkenntnisinteresse und Theorievielfalt"..
as a title, how about:
Theories, their premises and their diversity.
Theories, Premises and Theoretical Diversity
Theories, Epistemology and Theoretical Diversity

: keep it simple, in the absence of the other headings in the table of contents which might give us the clue we need to come up with an authoritative translation

Craig Meulen
: not sure about "cognitive interest" but "scientific interest" - why not, and the Leo discussions are useful.
