Source text - English Perception does not consist in a passive reception of stimuli, but in the selection of these stimuli, their confrontation with memory data, their organization, and their interpretation. Neuroscience reports on how this process works, noting a differentiated treatment of stimuli by categories and the existence of a link between bottom-up paths, based on external and reflex-like data, and top-down paths, such as mental image and the impact of cognitive phenomena on perception. However, awareness of the active nature of perception and its links to cognition and mental representations is not new. Its expressions are found throughout history, nonetheless they were more manifest in the West, in late antiquity, in the Renaissance, at the turn of 1900 and in recent decades.
Thus, in the third century AD, Philostratus led the magician and philosopher Apollonius to say that there are two ways of imitating nature, one with the mind and the hand, as when one paints, the other with the spirit only, as when one sees images in clouds. At the end of the fifteenth century, Leonardo da Vinci motivated artists to stimulate their power of invention by looking at a stained wall, a coloured stone, the ashes of the fire, the clouds, or the mud, while Albrecht Dürer manipulated and drew a pillow seven times, so that one could discover faces formed by the folds (image 1). At the end of the nineteenth century, Hippolyte Taine affirmed that instead of saying that hallucination is a false external perception, it must be said that “external perception is a true hallucination”, and Odilon Redon defined the “sense of mystery” as “to always remain equivocal, with double, or triple aspects, hints of aspect (images in images), forms yet to be, or which shall be according to the spectator’s frame of mind”. Nowadays, many artists approach the relationship between the inner and outer worlds in terms that can be summarized by the title of a drawing by Markus Raetz, You are what you see or What you see is yourself (image 2): the ray of light seems to come out of the perceiving eye, on the right, but meets the mysterious profile that faces it, without illuminating it.
The theory and practice of art have contributed greatly to this awareness since ambiguity plays a privileged role. Not all images, in fact, are ambiguous to the same degree or in the same way. Some are intentional, and some thematize ambiguity itself. This is the case of a cartoon published in 1892 in the Munich humorous magazine Fliegende Blätter (image 3) with the following caption: “Which animals are most alike? The rabbit and the duck.” Depending on whether one interprets the left part of the animal as a beak or ears, one sees it as a duck or rabbit, and the spectator, warned by the caption of a resemblance between the two animals, is encouraged to oscillate their vision between the two terms of this alternative. The duck/rabbit, quickly reproduced and imitated in other magazines, has since fascinated psychologists, philosophers, and artists, while a cartoonist recently used it as a symbol of a “clash of civilizations” based on opposing interpretations of the same reality. (image 5).
In fact, the “resemblance” attributed to rabbit and duck is an identity. It is the perception that can be doubled, thanks to the abstraction of this image, which reduces the two animals to the black and white line drawing of a head, eliminates any reference to colour and texture, and manipulates elements such as the muzzle/neck and the base of the beak/ear, so as to allow a double reading. The term “abstraction” should not be understood here in the sense of “non-objectivity”, that is to say, exclusion of any mimetic reference: this meaning, which the theory of art of the first half of the twentieth century tended to impose and raise as an ideal, hinders a proper understanding of visual ambiguity. Abstraction here means subtraction and suppression of properties, or, according to a definition by Pierre Larousse, the operation “by which the mind [...] considers the independent qualities of the substances in which they reside”. It therefore does not reject resemblance as such, but produces a distance from any exclusive resemblance, allowing multiple similarity and play with the iconic reference. This phenomenon had already been highlighted at the end of the sixteenth century by the Carracci riddles (image 4): Cesare Malvasia’s commentary proposes to decipher them, from left to right, like the head and trowel of a mason protruding from a wall, the hood of a Capuchin resting behind his pulpit between two parts of a sermon, the head and spear of a rider participating in a tournament, the collection box and cane of a blind man appearing on a street corner; however, it is immediately apparent that they could be the subject of many other interpretations.

H «ομοιότητα» που αποδίδεται στον λαγό και την πάπια είναι, για την ακρίβεια, μια ταυτότητα. Η αντίληψη είναι που μπορεί να διπλασιαστεί χάρη στην αφαιρετικότητα αυτής της εικόνας, η οποία ανάγει τα δύο ζώα σε ένα ασπρόμαυρο σχέδιο ενός κεφαλιού, απαλείφει οποιαδήποτε παραπομπή σε χρώματα και υφές και παραποιεί στοιχεία όπως το ρύγχος/λαιμό και τη βάση του ράμφους/αυτιού έτσι ώστε να επιτρέπεται μια διπλή ανάγνωση. Ο όρος «αφαιρετικότητα» δεν θα έπρεπε εδώ να γίνεται κατανοητός με την έννοια της «μη αντικειμενικότητας», δηλαδή, τον αποκλεισμό οποιασδήποτε μιμητικής αναφοράς: αυτό το νόημα, που η θεωρία της τέχνης του πρώτου μισού του εικοστού αιώνα έτεινε να επιβάλει και να εξυψώσει σε ιδανικό, παρεμποδίζει τη σωστή κατανόηση της οπτικής αμφισημίας.
