I agree with Laurent. Most of my best clients have approached me after finding me on ProZ, checking my profile to see that my background and experience match what they are looking for, and then sending me an email that is addressed to me by name, tells me what they want me for and invites me to respond with availability and price.
i also get loads of careless bunched emails from people who have gone no further than producing a list of translators with more or less the right language... See more

I don't know if one way of acquisition is clearly better than the other, but for me over the years it’s been first of all doing a good job (if you do a good job, your clients will come back to you and become regulars and you will get more clients through word of mouth from customers and colleagues). Since 2007 I have acquired the vast majority of my new clients via Proz (participating in KudoZ helps as the number of selected answers boosts your ranking in the directory) and through my website.

Network by maintaining close ties with colleagues still working at your former employer(s), network by going to conferences, meetings etc. and making your presence known. Sell yourself/boast -let people know how good you are and convince them they need your services and won't find anyone better. This is all part of having a good business sense. It's not everyone's cup of tea, but it does seem to work well for those who actively apply these strategies. On Proz and in real life. ▲ Collapse
