Source text - English Innovative drugs often mean new treatment options for patients and advances in health care for the American public. When it comes the development of new drugs and therapeutic biological products, FDA’s Center for Drug Evaluation and Research (CDER) provides clarity to drug developers on the necessary study design elements and other data needed in the drug application to support a full and comprehensive assessment. To do so, CDER relies on its understanding of the science used to create new products, testing and manufacturing procedures, and the diseases and conditions that new products are designed to treat.
Each year, CDER approves a wide range of new drugs and biological products:
• Some of these products have never been used in clinical practice. Below is a listing of new molecular entities and new therapeutic biological products that CDER approved in 2023. This listing does not contain vaccines, allergenic products, blood and blood products, plasma derivatives, cellular and gene therapy products, or other products that the Center for Biologics Evaluation and Research approved in 2023.
• Others are the same as, or related to, previously approved products, and they will compete with those products in the marketplace. See Drugs@FDA for information about all of CDER’s approved drugs and biological products.
Certain drugs are classified as new molecular entities (“NMEs”) for purposes of FDA review. Many of these products contain active moieties that FDA had not previously approved, either as a single ingredient drug or as part of a combination product. These products frequently provide important new therapies for patients. Some drugs are characterized as NMEs for administrative purposes, but nonetheless contain active moieties that are closely related to active moieties in products that FDA has previously approved. FDA’s classification of a drug as an “NME” for review purposes is distinct from FDA’s determination of whether a drug product is a “new chemical entity” or “NCE” within the meaning of the Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act.

Seu objetivo é fornecer aos investigadores e a outros envolvidos na condução do ensaio clínico informações relativas à dose, regime posológico, métodos de administração e procedimentos de monitoramento de segurança. A BI também fornece suporte para o monitoramento dos participantes do ensaio clínico durante a sua condução. Neste ínterim, as informações devem ser apresentadas em uma linguagem concisa, clara, simples e objetiva para melhor orientar os investigadores na condução do ensaio clínico.

A BI deve conter uma breve descrição do medicamento experimental; da caracterização química; da atividade biológica; da formulação; da caracterização dos efeitos farmacológicos e toxicológicos do medicamento experimental em animais e em seres humanos, quando aplicável; informações de segurança e eficácia em humanos obtidas a partir de ensaios clínicos já realizados; bem como quaisquer informações críticas a respeito do medicamento experimental. Translation - English Investigator's Brochure (IB) is a document comprising non-clinical and clinical data of an investigational drug relevant to human study. Its purpose is to provide investigators and others involved in the clinical trial execution with information on the dose, dosing regimen, methods of administration, and safety monitoring procedures. The IB also provides support for the monitoring of clinical trial participants during its realization. In the meantime, the information should be presented in concise, clear, simple, and objective language to better guide the investigators carrying out the clinical trial.

The IB should contain a brief description of the investigational drug; chemical characterization; biological activity; formulation; characterization of the pharmacological and toxicological effects of the investigational drug in animals and humans, if applicable; human safety and efficacy information obtained from previous clinical trials; as well as any critical information regarding the investigational drug. The IB should present the already known data, the available results of non-clinical and clinical studies, ongoing studies, and their preliminary data, if any. The IB should explain the description of the possible risks and adverse events related to the investigational drug based on previous experience, as well as precautions, safety warnings, or special follow-ups, including from other regulatory authorities, to be followed during development, to better guide the investigators who will carry out the study.

Source text - English The brain is like a group of experts. All the parts of the brain work together, but each part has its own special responsibilities. The brain can be divided into three basic units: the forebrain, the midbrain, and the hindbrain.
The hindbrain includes the upper part of the spinal cord, the brain stem, and a wrinkled ball of tissue called the cerebellum. The hindbrain controls the body’s vital functions such as respiration and heart rate.
The cerebellum coordinates movement and is involved in learned rote movements. When you play the piano or hit a tennis ball you are activating the cerebellum.
The uppermost part of the brainstem is the midbrain, which controls some reflex actions and is part of the circuit involved in the control of eye movements and other voluntary movements. The forebrain is the largest and most highly developed part of the human brain: it consists primarily of the cerebrum and the structures hidden beneath it […].
When people see pictures of the brain it is usually the cerebrum that they notice. The cerebrum sits at the topmost part of the brain and is the source of intellectual activities. It holds your memories, allows you to plan, enables you to imagine and think. It allows you to recognize friends, read books, and play games.
The cerebrum is split into two halves (hemispheres) by a deep fissure. Despite the split, the two cerebral hemispheres communicate with each other through a thick tract of nerve fibers that lies at the base of this fissure. Although the two hemispheres seem to be mirror images of each other, they are different. For instance, the ability to form words seems to lie primarily in the left hemisphere, while the right hemisphere seems to control many abstract reasoning skills.
For some as-yet-unknown reason, nearly all of the signals from the brain to the body and vice-versa cross over on their way to and from the brain. This means that the right cerebral hemisphere primarily controls the left side of the body, and the left hemisphere primarily controls the right side. When one side of the brain is damaged, the opposite side of the body is affected. For example, a stroke in the right hemisphere of the brain can leave the left arm and leg paralyzed.

I have a Bachelor of Arts in Languages and started working as a Portuguese proofreader the same year my language studies began, giving me 13 years of practice now. Since then, I have been an essay-writing tutor, proofreader, and translator. Among these activities, texts from the pharmaceutical industry (clinical trials mostly) stand out, with 7+ years of experience. Another important experience was preparing medical scientific papers for submission considering the journals’ requirements, which gave me knowledge of the scientific publishing process. I also have a Bachelor of Science in Psychology and an interest in neuroscience translation.
