Hi,
I am seeking software which can read finnish text to me, to help me in learning finnish (I am hoping there exists something similiar to the "read text" functionality found in Windows XP.

Probably you mean machine translation. It's extremely unlikely that there is a multi-purpose program for Finnish, but try Eurotranslator. You cannot understand Finnish even using a dictionary without some knowledge of grammar.

I am trying to read the Finnish language, to myself both quietly and out loud. A problem I have, is that I have very limited opportunities to hear the language spoken these days, (as a child, I heard it much more frequently.) and I'm quite positive my pronunciation of many Finnish words is awful, if not horrendous.

I’m familiar with the idea that there is a very high relationship between the Finnish alphabet and the pronunciation of Finnish words, but am still finding it very hard to trust my thick tongue when I am listening to my struggling attempts to read aloud. For example, “syvyyden” is one of many words that I can try to imagine, but I am positive that my attempts to speak the word to a Finnish-speaking person would evoke pangs of deepest sympathy.
And when I was playing with XP the other night, I noticed they have a utility in the OS that will read text aloud to me. It seemed to me that it would be much harder to teach a computer to read English, with all its special rules and exceptions to pronunciation, than it would be to teach the computer to read a Language like Finnish. And so I thought, surely this must have been done, to assist those unable to read, but my searches on the web turned up nothing. And then I remembered you people here at ProZ, and reasoned that if such software existed, someone here might be aware of it.
So, the reason I am looking for software that can read the Finnish Language aloud, is so I can listen to it and hopefully, learn by example in that manner. Of course I am doing much reading of the Finnish Language, and although it is coming (very slowly), I am not unsatisfied and am having a very enjoyable time of it.

I live in Germany but I listen every single day Finnish news from YLE TV via Internet. There are also some other programs available.
But, of course, I understand, that listening news might be frustrating in the beginning.

Thank you for your suggestion, it looks very much like what I had in mind, except for the price. The software I was hoping for was much closer to free ... This is strictly an extra curricular undertaking on a strictly empty banking account.
I was very interested in your mention of the YLE TV program: can you tell me if this is a subscription service? Also, I would be interested in Finnish Radio via internet, as I would listen to that while I work. My personal theory is (for what it is worth), that some combination of active and passive learning would produce better results than either active or passive learning alone. And so I'd like to ask if anyone can share the I.P. address or URL of a Finnish Radio station(s) that I might enjoy--it wouldn't matter (too) much what the content is, I'd be glad to give them a try.

Thank you once again--this link is perfect for me, and I am enjoying it immensely already. I am finding many resouces (isn't the internet amazing?)--here is one that I have been enjoying a lot (it has a demo of their software which reads aloud in the finnish toungue.):
