Dear all,
I'm translating a document with many repetitions. It keeps saying:
"XYZ" a failure
where "XYZ" can be a one-word, two-word, three-word, etc., phrase.
Could anyone let me how can I replace "xyz a failure" so the translation reads "fracaso de xyz"?

control H (CTRL + H)
find what XYZ a failure
replace with (insert selected phrase)
click on find next to see them one by one and replace to validate
click on replace all to do them all at once (much faster)
be VERY careful for replacements... replace phrases rather than individual words... short words are often part of longer words and if you "replace all" you could end up with some weird words in your final version.... I ... See more control H (CTRL + H)

Thanks Alison. I know how to replace. What I want to know is how to replace the example given, as XYZ is a variable and the replacement implies a word order change.

Open the find/replace dialogue.
Check the "use wildcards" box
Open the "special" tab.
You will see a list of a number of choices, including "preceding 1 or more words" and "preceding 1 or more characters".
I use the Polish version of Word, so some of the commands may differ.
I would suggest you copy part of your text to a new file and play around to see what comes out.

sorry, my reply was wrong. i tried it but it failed to function. that's what search and replace was made for. wondering????

What about using actually xyz? I mean, you could change the one-word, two-words etc. expressions into x, xy, xyz in first round, than make the change "xyz a failure" into "fracaso de xyz" and then, change x, y, z one by one.
Be careful with replacements, though, a space before and after is usually required.
