CAT Nov 12, 2009

For the kind of translations I do, which are mostly given in a paper format, I do not use CAT tools, so I need to attend courses in order to remember the use, as practice, in my case, does not help!

"Combination of t. above" is called university/school :) Nov 12, 2009

Indeed, that is what many self-made 'pros' need the most

IMHO, freelance translation cannot be "learned" at any "courses"...

So, don't deceive yourselves.

IT and accounting courses Nov 12, 2009

Regarding languages, I keep on studying my languages all times, with the help of various sorts of books I have. Of course, online literature is also many a times useful. In India, I can read all Nepali newspapers and can be updated about any updated change in the language, that may have occurred due to time factor. I have some Sanskrit religious, grammar and literary books, which are of my deep interests being a hindu brahmin and a curious learner all the times.

Somebody can be taking courses in a language they hope to use as a source language one day, for starters.

Recycling Nov 12, 2009

It's called refreshing, recycling and updating your knowledge. Especially in English and French, new terms and uses are incorporated all the time. The culturally-bound aspect of language is also an evolving phenomenon, so if living away from your native country you may find yourself baffled upon your return by certain turns of phrase.

How can one become a translator and need language at all? You just have to know the "-ese" (legalese, financialese, technicalese, medicalese) and the use of especially TradosStudio.
Have Trados, will translate. All the other language skills, such a good understanding of semantics, syntax and style of your working-languages are totally superfluous.

No, seriously, first comes language, then IT (so that you can built and repair your pc, install your own network, then learn to install and use the appropriate programmes, get cheap software as a student of IT) and then comes the "-ese". How can you translate a text about accounting, if you have never been to a course of "accounting" or should I say "accountancy"? Then comes experience.

IT for dummies! Nov 12, 2009

Just started using WF so will need to improve my use of that - in the first instance, experiential learning - FOR ME, the best kind.

I sometimes get myself into a mess when working in XL or with tables, especially when the computer seems to have a mind of its own. I really need to get my butt in gear and improve the way I handle the basic IT.
I'm sure there are online courses/guidance and that I could improve with diligent use of the "Help" facilities, but up to now I haven't got a grip of that.

As for language, anyone who says that they don't need to study language (even current source AND target, whether by means of courses or self-study/reading) in my opinion will never improve as a translator. (My translations into English, my mother tongue, have generally improved since I got an audio book on creative writing for example - even good writers can pick up a different angle by thinking critically and sometimes the resources available just give you that other idea to keep things fresh).

Have a great day/evening/night folks!

Mark

I would like to know as much as my son and daughter.... I think they were born with an IT chip inside their brains!

Don't you feel that the new generation picks up anything and everthing related to IT very, very rapidly?

Have a nice day everyone

CAT/Translation Nov 12, 2009

I would love to take more courses in translation techniques. In fact, I am planning on starting NYU's translation program in the spring. I would also love to get more training on CAT tools.
