yes. I earned more as a teacher but there is more to life than money!

Possibly only as a hobby. Much better chances to earn money and make a good career in other professions. At least in my country

I can't imagine doing anything else or enjoying it as much. Plus it earns me a reasonable living and I have the flexibility to work it around other commitments. What more could I ask for?

No. I would have trained as a lawyer. And then probably would have become a legal translator just before retiring.

I love translating, except that there is so much more I could have done having the opportunities offered today in different environmental fields.
I earned a scholarship for my Bachelor's Degree in Translation so that my parents didn't have to pay my tuition fees because at that time, they were going through hard financial times, so when I heard about the program, I gave it a try and got the scholarship. But translation wasn't my first choice.

I've always wanted to be a translator. I still remember the first translation I did: I was 14 years old... (shudder)

I've always been very keen on languages from a very young age, so to be able to work with them on a daily basis is great! I also love the flexibility of the job, especially as I now have a little girl, so I can be a mum and work around looking after my daughter doing something I enjoy - best of both worlds!! I also love the challenge of the job - for me the boring office job I had before becoming established as a freelance translator just didn't cut it. I didn't feel any sense of achievement or ... I have always loved learning so the constant learning you have to do as a translator is also something I enjoy.
Yes, there are other professions that I am attracted to, but I definately feel translation fits best with my life as it is now and think myself lucky to be able to carry out this profession : ) ▲ Collapse

in another field. I always wanted to translate novels, but ended up in telecoms. Or I would be an interpreter or work for the UN. Something a little more glamorous that would make me travel. If I had to start my life all over but still end up becoming a translator, I would have re-learned Russian properly and learned Japanese.

When I was younger I considered translating as a last resort and wanted to read medicine.
I liked languages, but saw them just as a sideline. It took me many years to discover that lots of people do not have the same ability I have to find words and put them on paper, and being able to do it in more than one language is a gift I did not appreciate for a long time.
