I used to work in a company as Managing Director and I met several politicians and journalists (TV, radio) during the presentation/advertising of a cultural product in the creation of which I had participated (translation, proofreading).

No, but ... Nov 1, 2010

... I once did a series of jobs for a famous Formula One racing team owner importing a car from Germany. But all dealings went through his secretary!

It's the nearest I get to brushing with the rich and famous through work!

I used to work as interpreter/translator for Center for Geostrategic Research in Banja Luka (Bosnia and Herzegovina), and used to meet most of the prominent national politicians, but internationally the most prominent person was Johan Galtung (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Johan_Galtung).

Not at all but... Nov 1, 2010

my closest brush with fame was a cheque I received from Warner Bros for translating a list of foods and spices into Arabic, apparently for the then upcoming Charlie and the Chocolate Factory movie starring Jonny Depp. I got the film on DVD and scanned every corner of the screen for a single word written in Arabic (and why would there be any Arabic-language spices in the chocolate factory??) and even the deleted scenes, but nothing. Oh well. The cheque's gone now, but at least I still have Warner... See more

Once Nov 1, 2010

As an interpreter I was working for a Polish cultural institute, which organised a Russian year in Poland. During one of those events I met the Polish First Lady at the time. I also had the chance to meet the best Russian Ballet dancers (meaning the bet in the World).

Pardon me, Nov 1, 2010

is this about "meeting" famous "people" or simply about coming across global entities? Never, personally!

Either way, I believe that interpreters might have a better chance here than translators.

I would say yes, but it all depends on how you define 'famous'.

During one of my jobs, I had to directly negotiate interior decoration with VIPs in some Arab countries; I handled the style and decoration with the VIP and the 'business' part (pricing, terms of payment, etc.) with their accountants/staff. Perhaps the most "famous" of these VIPs was the previous leader of Iraq. I negotiated the turn-key interior decoration of one of his palaces.

Nevertheless, I still consider all my clients as important people.

Have a great day... See more

Hugh Hefner and his bunnies Nov 1, 2010

Now, I don't usually work as an interpreter; translating is more my thing. But when I got the chance to interpret for Hugh and his Bunnies (that part was particularly easy) on 80th birthday tour of Europe I couldn't pass it up!

Well, I wasn't technically a translator at the time, I was still a student, and that was my only experience of interpreting (I only translate in writing, I do not interpret). But I did interpret for him when he was being interviewed. I was impressed by how down-to-earth he was, he was really very nice. And very understanding of the challenges of interpretation.
