I might let out a few expletives to vent whatever I'm going through with particular jobs.
But, I will never actually talk to myself. It would probably turn out as follows:

Jekyll: Oy, 'Olmsey!
Holmes: Crumbs, what is it this time?
Jekyll: You know that Anonymous geezer?
Holmes: The 'nameless one' in Proz quick polls, old chap?
Jekyll: Yeh, that's the one, guv'nor.

Jekyll: E's gettin' a lot of airplay these days.
Holmes: In what way, old sport?
Jekyll: Well. E's bin able to post almost 30 polls since the New Year evun wivout a bleedin' name.
Holmes: You know, actually I think they've all been posted by Kellyanne Conway under this pseudonym as she doesn't want to let on that she's trying to undermine and destroy democracy in the Proz site by spreading 'alternative facts' and setting up 'fake polls.'
Jekyll: Gor blimey! You are a clever so-and-so, aren't yer!
Holmes: You won't tell anyone will you, old boy?
Jekyll: Do NOT worry, guv'nor. I'll keep me Norf and Souf shut.
Holmes: Jolly spiffing! Now, let's get back to work before the Kellyanne poll generator spits out another Country Cousin.
Jekyll: Triffic! Bob's yer uncle!

I hear the weirdest things come out of my mouth. They don't make sense at all. (This is recent, BTW.)

Now and then Feb 19, 2017

I talk to myself mainly to vent when something goes wrong, e. g. browser freezes, the computer is too slow for my typing, the Dragon is misunderstanding me and comes up with all kinds of weird words, when accidentally deleting something that shouldn't be sent to file 13, etc. The day when I upgraded to WordFast 4 and was not prompted to save my existing TM's, resulting in their loss, it turned into quite a long monologue.

Other than that, the old song title "Silence is golden" applies.

... or otherwise it might end up in my translation, because I talk to my computer all the time when translating (speech recognition)

I live alone and some days my own voice is the only human voice around to hear. Talking to myself out loud usually involves just calling myself stupid. It’s kind of a release valve when I'm stressed about something.

According to Psychology, understanding (as a part of internalization) does require talking everything to oneself--internally.

As a translator, I often read extracts from original or translation aloud to learn new terms and set expressions or just to make it more fluid yet concise.

As an interpreter, after a long meeting sometimes I talk “to myself”, missing the end)

That way I'm sure I'm talking to someone who knows what I'm talking about and might even give me an intelligent answer.

I don't know, I've never asked myself Feb 19, 2017

It's like when people ask for my phone number. I tell them: "Sorry, I haven't a clue! I never call my number, so I can't remember it. Errr... Do you ever call yourself? If so, you'd better watch out - they say talking to yourself is like looking for hairs on the palm of your hand. And you know what that means, don't you?"

And then I have to fish the damn thing out of my pocket, or find my business card, to answer what the asker thought was simple question...

LOL Julian!

I talk to myself a lot, but usually while *not* working.

I claim that I picked up the habit to generate background noise for my rats, but I haven't had rats for years, and I'm still doing it. So maybe it's background noise for myself? But I can still claim that it makes my houseplants grow better.

In any case, I see nothing wrong with talking to myself. (Note to self: research whether animals do it too.)

Oh yes Feb 19, 2017

Beside expletives, I sometimes say things aloud to hear how they sound. Or when translating birth certificates for example and checking my translation, I say the names and figures to myself aloud, too - I somehow feel I am more likely to get them right that way.

Except when something pisses me off, then I curse out-loud, but that wouldn't be talking to myself, I guess.

But I don't need to say anything if I'm concentrated. I can keep it inside.
And since there is usually someone else in the linving room with me (my wife or one of my kids), sometimes I say things related to my work out loud, as if talking to them and not to myself. And someone usually replies too.
