日本語 term

生身で向き合う

日本語 から 英語 社会科学 その他 Nursing
This expression is used to describe how nurses confront or deal with the lives of their patients. The sentence is given below. this is a "concept" in a grounded theory model and is the reason why some nurses experience "multiple grief."

Concept:
{全ての命に生身で向き合う}

Sentence:
また、≪命への向き合い方≫のうち、{全ての命に生身で向き合う}ことで{多重悲嘆}に陥ったパターンでは離職に至る可能性があることが、過去に離職し復職を遂げた経験をもつ対象者のデータから裏付けられた。

Can anyone explain the nuance or suggest a term.

Thanks,

Nick

Discussion

Port City Jun 21, 2015:
In response to your note, 生身で向き合う is pretty much the same as 正面から向き合う; dealing with others "head on" (without implying collision, but rather implying "without reserve" or "wholeheartedly"). http://ameblo.jp/shin-ei-cc/entry-11439993475.html

In particular, what I can't fathom is whether the 生身で refers to the nurse's perspective of the patients life or their own behavior.

treating patients wholeheartedly

I think here 生身で向き合う means treating others wholeheartedly without any buffer. 生身で向き合う itself is like dealing with others without any buffer. (Regarding your question in the discussion, 生身 refers to the nurse.)
In the below-link, 生身 is contrasted with 仮面(the mask is a buffer) and used as "patients without any buffer (thus exposed to undesirable things) and doctors with a mask (thus protected from undesirable things)".

In this particular context, however, since 全ての命に生身で向き合う is followed by 多重悲嘆に陥った, "treating patients wholeheartedly" seems more fitting as it is strongly associated with one's heart.
Note from asker:
Your link was really helpful. Later in the study, the researcher refined the category to {全ての命に正面に向き合う}. So I think the idea of wholeheartedly makes sense. Thanks.
