~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ (4) Large clients and translation companies are now talking about pooling linguistic data. Does it matter to you? ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
A forum topic was recently posted (by me) with the title "Clients and large translation companies are now talking about pooling linguistic data. Should we be there?"
This question was prompted by the recent formation of a group called the "TAUS Data Association". Quoting from their press release: "TAUS Data Association Incorporated by Group of 40 Founding Members... (Amsterdam, June 30, 2008) Forty organizations active in buying and supplying translation services and technologies have jointly established a new industry association aimed at sharing parallel language data with the objective to stimulate innovation and automation of translation activities. The TAUS Data Association... "
The founding members of this association include not only translation companies, but also notable global companies such as Adobe, Cisco, Dell, eBay, Intel, Microsoft, Oracle, Sun Microsystems and Yahoo.
The responses to the questions asked with regard to the impact of this on member businesses, and the idea of ProZ.com joining, has been interesting. See: http://www.proz.com/topic/110929
Of the thread, member ICL wrote: "So many crucial aspects of the current trends in our industry have been mentioned, and in such an insightful way, I personally consider it a very useful reference of a lot of what lies ahead in the world of translation, especially technical translation. Definitely food for thought."
As a company, we on the staff at ProZ.com are evaluating how best to serve you, our members / customers, as the pace of innovation in the industry accelerates. Please consider reading and adding any of your thoughts, advice or requests to that thread.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ (6) What set of concrete parameters could be used to distinguish a "professional translator" from someone who is not? ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Just this week, two forum posters have asked, in effect, "Am I a professional translator?"
If you had to define a set of hard and fast criteria -- a litmus test to distinguish "professional translators" from others -- what parameters would you include? Would you include:
* Having done paid work for clients?
* Having earned a tested credential?
* Completing a course of study?
* Being able to generate an invoice?
* A combination of the above?
Stepping back, is it even possible to delineate with hard parameters how those of us in the industry are different than those outside it? Does it matter to our standing as an industry?
Please add your opinion. Results will be shared next newsletter. http://www.proz.com/survey/164

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ (7) Connect(tm) versions of directory and job postings becoming preferred ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The Connect(tm) platform, featuring modern "web 2.0" versions of the ProZ.com directory and job posting system, is gaining in popularity. An increasing percentage of directory searches and job postings now go through Connect, as opposed to the traditional platform.
One outsourcer described Connect(tm) as "A beautiful, beautiful development/evolution from the initial directories, in sync with customer demand." Frankly, that may be an overstatement. :) But if you have not yet tried Connect yet, it is worth a look. Simply put, it is the best platform available for finding translators and translation companies, backed by the industry's leading database of translation professionals.
To visit the Connect(tm) directory, go to: http://www.proz.com/connect/find?classic_hybrid=y or click "New directory" under the "Directories" tab. Note that Connect is available to paying members of ProZ.com only.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ (8) Get short jobs done faster using new Connect workflow tool ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
If you frequently outsource short texts of a type that can be completed by a single translator in a single file, you may want to check out the new "prequalified" mode in job postings. It can make your life easier.
Basically, in the "prequalified" job approach, the process of checking availability and routing work to your own translators is streamlined and "webified". You upload the file and translator emails, and invitations to complete the job are sent out in batches automatically. Translators can review the work and terms and decide whether or not to accept the job.
When the work does get done, you are notified so that you can pick up the completed file. That simple.
This "prequalified job" option is included among the suite of services available to ProZ.com corporate members. To use it, click "New job posting" under the jobs menu -- http://www.proz.com/translation-jobs -- then select "Prequalified" as the job type.
Please try this type of job posting on your next small job, and report back on how it goes with a support ticket: http://www.proz.com/support Improvements will be made over the coming weeks and months based on feedback received.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ (9) New directory of translation companies being created. Fill out your profile. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
A new ProZ.com directory is now being created to provide a better way to search for translation companies around the world.
A new profile format has been developed, with the goal of enabling you to put forward the information that best represents your company and its services to potential clients.
You are invited to test the new profile format.
If there is information that you would like to share about your company but for which there is no designated field in the new profile format, please request that the field be added with a support ticket: http://www.proz.com/support
Note that the directory is not yet visible. Filling out your profile now is a way to ensure that your company will be in the new directory at the time it is released.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ (10) Poll: Do you type your translation on top of the source? ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
One of this month's polls, submitted by member Muriel Vasconcellos -- http://www.proz.com/profile/62649 -- goes like this:
"You receive the source text in electronic format: do you type the translation on top of it?"
Respondents are split almost evenly between 'yes' and 'no', reflecting, in part, on CAT tool usage. Differences are also noted by language and field. To read the discussion, go to: http://www.proz.com/topic/110507
