Constipation occurs when there is excessive hardness of stools, infrequent bowel movements, a sense of incomplete emptying of the rectum, or very small bowel movements. Constipation may be caused by poor bowel habits, failure to respond to natural signs that a bowel movement is needed, or overuse of laxatives with resulting dependence on them. Constipation may also signify other disorders such as anal fissure (ulcer), emotional disorders, irritable colon syndrome, general debilitation disorders (causing loss of strength), hypothyroidism (thyroid deficiency), diverticulitis (inflammation of an intestinal pouch), hyperparathyroidism (hyperactivity of the parathyroid glands), or congenital disorders (abnormally large colon). Constipation also may result from the effects of certain medications, particularly pain medications such as antacids, codeine, and some medications used to treat hypertension. When constipation is caused by one of these conditions, treatment is directed at the underlying disorder. If constipation is caused by poor bowel habits, the treatment is to “re-educate” the colon so that it will respond more normally. It is important to note that a daily bowel movement is not necessary for normal health, although most people feel better if they have one. In fact, it is possible to go 1-2 weeks without a bowel movement and suffer no harm.
Treatment:
Increase physical activity if possible. People in good physical health seldom have problems with constipation.
Include fruit juice or stewed fruits (apples, prunes, apricots, figs) in your breakfast each morning. Eat raw or cooked fruits for other meals or between meals.
Set a time for bowel movements and attempt to observe this time every day. It is best that the toilet is visited each day within one hour after a good breakfast. Sit for at least 10 minutes, whether or not a bowel movement occurs immediately.
Do not take laxatives or cathartics.
Prescribed medications must be suited to your needs, so take as directed. Do not take any additional medicine (even over the counter medicines) without consulting your doctor.
If no bowel movement occurs in the first three days, use an enema (such as a disposable Fleet’s enema) for temporary relief.
Taking an enema:
1. Spread a bath mat or towel on the bathroom floor or bottom of bathtub.
2. Fill an enema bag with one quart of lukewarm tap water.
3. Hold or place the enema bag no higher than 30 inches from the floor.
4. Lie on your left side on the mat or towel.
5. Insert enema nozzle into the rectum.
6. Allow the water to flow in slowly, a little at a time. If pain occurs, stop the flow until the pain subsides and allow more water to flow in. Repeat this until the entire quart has been used.
7. Hold the fluid inside until discomfort occurs, and then sit on the toilet to evacuate your bowels.

يَحْدثُ الإمساكُ عندما تكون المراحيض قاسية جدّاً، حركات الأمعاءِ نادرةِ , وعند الإحساس بأنه هناك نقص في الإفْراغ مِنْ المستقيمِ، أَو هناك حركات صغيرةِ من الأمعاءِ. الإمساك قَدْ يَكُون سببه عاداتِ الأمعاءِ السيّئةِ، فشل للرَدّ على الإشاراتِ الطبيعيةِ التي تتطلّبها حركات الأمعاءِ ، أَو إفراط في إستعمال المسهلاتِ بسبب الإعتمادِ عليهم. الإمساك قَدْ يُبيّنُ اِضطراباتَ أخرى كالناسورِ (القرحة)، الإضطرابات العاطفية، تلازم القولونِ العصبي، اِضطرابات وهنٍ عامّةِ (تُسبّبُ خسارةَ القوّةِ) ,نقص درقيّ، إلتهاب ردبي (إلتهاب كيسِ معويِ) , حركات كثيرة من من الحشوات الدريقيّة، أَو اِضطرابات تناسبية (القولون كبير بشكل غير عادي). الإمساك أيضاً قَدْ يَنْتجُ مِنْ تأثيراتِ بَعْض الأدويةِ، خصوصاً أدوية الألمِ مثل معدّلاتِ الحموضة، كودين، وبَعْض الأدويةِ التي تستعملُ لمعالجة إرتفاع ضغط الدمَ. إذا الإمساك سببه أحد هذه الحالات، العلاج يوجّه إلى الاضطراب الضمنيّة. إذا الإمساكِ سببه عاداتِ الأمعاءِ السيّئةِ، المعالجة هي أَنْ "تُعيدَ تربية" هذه الأمعاء حتى تعمل بشكل طبيعي. من المُهمِ المُلاحَظَة أن حركة الأمعاءِ اليوميةِ لَيستْ ضروريةَ للصحةِ الطبيعيةِ، بالرغم من أن أكثر الناسِ يَشْعرونَ بالتحسّن إذا عندهم حركة واحدة. في الحقيقة، يحتملُ أن يذهب في 1-2 أسابيع بدون حركة أمعاءِ ولَنْ تَعاني أي أذى.

• "لا تأْخذُ المسهلاتَ.
• "الأدوية المَوْصُوفة يجب أنْ تُناسِبَ حاجاتِكِ، وتأْخذُ كما وُجّهَت. لا تَأْخذْ أيّ دواء إضافي (حتى على الأدويةِ المُضادةِ) بدون إسْتِشارة طبيبِكَ.
• "إن لم تَحْدثَ أي حركةِ أمعاءِ في الأيامِ الثلاثة الأولى، إستعمل حقنة شرجيةَ (مثل حقنة أسطولِ الشرجية الّتي تستعمل مرة واحدة) للإغاثةِ المؤقتةِ.
أَخْذ الحقنة الشرجية:
1. أُنشر حصيرة أَو منشفةِ على أرضيةِ الحمّامَ أَو قاعَ حوضِ الحمام.
2. إملأْ حقيبةَ الحقنة الشرجيةِ بِكوُورتِن واحد مِنْ الماءِ الفاترِ من الحنفيةِ.
3. إقبض أَو ضع حقيبةَ الحقنة الشرجيةَ على ما لا يزيد عن 30 بوصةِ مِنْ الأرض.
4. إستندْ على جانبِكَ اليسارِ على الحصيرةِ أَو المنشفةِ.
5. أدخلْ خرطومَ الحقنة الشرجيةِ إلى المستقيمِ.
