Bonjour, je ne comprends pas l'emploi de "prevailing situations" ici... Voici le contexte (cours de gestion de projet) :

: As highlighted in my discussion post, I think 'actuel' (which of course has nothing to do here with real/unreal!) might be taken as being current conditions at the time the reader is reading this — when it might well be 'that were prevailing then...'

: In EN, that is not the sense of 'prevailing' here. / No, this is nothing to do with 'worthy' or 'significatives' — it just means 'the situations that exist at some specific moment of interest'. Please see my discussion post.

We could also use something like circonstances significatives as it surely refers to some special cases of worthy investment project.

D’après les exemples donnés, et puisque « business case » se traduit aussi « dossier de décision/décisionnel », j’aurais tendance à retenir la nuance « déterminantes ». Après tout, parmi les situations considérées, ce sont les déterminantes/dominantes qui justifient le projet. Sans compter que le mot « situation » contient déjà la notion de « conditions qui existent à un moment donné ».
'To prevail' (over something) usually does mean 'to take precedence over' in some way, and equated to 'prévaloir' in FR
But the other meaning, although indeed related, has the sense of 'to be prevalent or common, dominant, etc. In the sense of a 'prevailing wind', this is usually rnedered by 'régner'.
In this instance, it is the latter meaning, though here, it has more the weaker sense of 'to exist (in a majority) at some specific point in time' — for example, "Politicians tend to align themselves to prevailing popular trends."
