German term

ausgewiesen

German to English Social Sciences General / Conversation / Greetings / Letters
From a letter, written by a Jewish woman in Vienna in 1940:

"Gisl kommt öfters zu uns, sie könnte ein Affidavit dringend brauchen und wäre nach ihrer Registriernummer auch schon längst drangekommen. Die Arme weiß nicht, was sie anfangen soll, und ist doch ausgewiesen und muß sich 2x wöchentlich melden."

The use of "ausgewiesen" here is puzzling. If she were expelled or deported, she would no longer be there to report twice a week...

"Gisl often comes to us , she could urgently do with an affidavit and should have got it long ago according to her registration number. The poor thing doesn't know what to do, but she's registered and has to report twice a week."

'registered', as in possessing an 'Ausweis', is the obvious and logical meaning here

Thank you! but not sure why you chose to machine translate a section of the text which doesn't include the question asked. Maybe because there's no similarity between Deepl's version and mine?
agree philgoddard : I'm not totally sure of this - maybe you need a reference or two - but it does make sense.

Yep, thanks, Phil. The idea is that she is officially registered within the system, and is therefore obliged. That's my reading.
