Discussion

burak sengir (asker) Jun 23, 2010:
I guess you are right; apparently their intention was to draw a comparison between Ostia & Muiden; since I can't leave it untranslated, "mouth (of a river)/(uit)monding will do justice; thank you...
Barend van Zadelhoff Jun 23, 2010:
I forgot to mention perhaps you need to know that there is also a "fort" at the mouth of the river Vecht

Bij Muiden ligt in het IJmeer de Vechtmonding, welke is voorzien van twee strekdammen van circa 500 meter lengte. Net binnendijks, ten westen van de Vecht, ligt Fort Muiden, dat vanaf de 15e eeuw is uitgebouwd tot belangrijk onderdeel van de "Stelling van Amsterdam".

Barend van Zadelhoff Jun 23, 2010:
I would like to add that "Ostia" and "Muiden" can be considered to be near-synonyms

"ostium" (plural: ostia) is Latin and means "mouth (of a river)" in this context, in Dutch: uitmonding

they try to draw a comparison between the name Ostia and the name Muiden / muda / (uit)monding
Frank van Thienen (X) Jun 22, 2010:
Mouth of the River (or leave untranslated) Context is really needed here, but basically, Muiden is the name of a Dutch port city. See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Muiden : "It was called Amuda, meaning "mouth of the (river) A". "A" was the old name for the Vecht river."

Thanks Barend, for the additional explanation. The name Ostia occurs repeatedly in Muiden and that should also have triggered something!
Example sentence:

It was called Amuda, meaning "mouth of the (river) A".
