energy goes to deform ...
There are lots of refs for "energy goes to" and one mathematical one(below) for "energy goes to deform". Other alternatives: energy causes the deformation of; energy is spent on deforming; energy is expended on the deformation of; energy is dissipated by the deformation of. However, the literal translation is fine, and may well be a scientific usage.

: energy seems to make no "use" here, it just "goes", or "is spent", does not it?

goes for, used for - what's the difference? spent also means used up, which is not the case here.

Looking at some of the other answers and comments, I began to wonder whether this energy is being deliberately used or not.
"The energy is used to..." definitely means that the energy is being used intentionally for that purpose. (Is the deformation/strain being deliberately caused in this case? - seems unlikely, unless this is "testing to destruction").
In the end I decided "serves to..." is the best option.
