Swedish term

anhörig

Swedish to English Medical Medical: Health Care
En anhörig till en patient (i detta fall en missbrukare). Tyda.se föreslår "relative" och "dependant" men jag tänker mig att en anhörig varken behöver vara släkt med eller egentligen beroende av den hen är anhörig till. Finns det någon bättre term?

Sven Petersson Mar 10, 2013:
@ SafeTex, If one believes that there is an error in the source text one should, as translator, not correct the perceived error in the target text, but translate as-is, and then express ones doubts and opinions in a translator's note to ones customer.
SafeTex Mar 10, 2013:
Drug addicts often don't have family support Hello

Following Linda's remark, I too think that it would be a pretty strange program that didn't allow drug addicts to come with a friend knowing that they often lose touch with the family

And what if you have no family?

Linda Larsson (X) Mar 10, 2013:
If this is in regards to, for example, an "anhörig program, i.e. Al-Anon" then it could certainly include friend or family member.

agree rajagopalan sampatkumar : relative or relation in English. That is, a person related by blood/family.

Thank you very much!
agree Yvonne Tapper-Gardzina : Best translation for anhörig, and this person could be a relative even though he or she is a drug user.

next of kin

another option though this is really "närmaste anhörig"

agree Lene Johansen : I understand that you want to include the wider meaning, but it does not have that in Swedish. http://sv.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anhörig These distinctions are important in regards to power of attorney.

agree lena helson : having just been discharged from hosp in UK I was asked to fill in a form asking for next of kin

agree George Hopkins : Definitely. Check any English dictionary.

disagree Yvonne Tapper-Gardzina : Next of kin is the closest blood relative, and it doesn't say nära anhörig.

(close) relative or friend

Hello

I take note of Sven's suggestion but I have also noted the remarks of the asker and that he wants an expression that covers 'non relatives ' as well

This is a typical expression (with variants) and the adjective 'close' can be interpreted as just qualifying the relative or the friend as well

That is probably why you see variants like 'relative or close friend' as well

Peer comment(s):

disagree Sven Petersson : "Friend" does not qualify as "anhörig", kindly see my reference! - Addendum: @ SafeTex, The Asker's wishes, expressed or implied, do not change the definition of the Swedish word.

Hi Sven. I've seen the reference and I agree but the asker also wanted a wider term that included close friends. Drug addicts have often lost contact with the family and do turn up with friends to substitute relatives. Regards

Thanks but Sven is also right in what he says. The asker will have to decide if 'anhörig' is strictly applied throughout the document or if friends can accompany the drug addicts and the word was 'badly chosen' by the original authors
