A friend of mine would like to know how much you can invoice within a fiscal year when you are not established ?

Are you asking what is the legal maximum amount per year that a person who is not legally established can invoice in France? Or are you asking for an estimate of how much a new entrant to the translation industry can expect to earn?

In France, you need to have a legal status in order to invoice anything. While the tax folks *may* be lenient about occasional and modest supplementary income, social administrations and particularly l'URSSAF are not. Invoicing or earning one red cent from your work without having a legal status (salaried employee, portage, profession libéral...) is illegal as it is the same thing as working under the table (travailler au noir).

Given for granted that not a penny shall pass without it being invoiced, being "legal" may be very inexpensive for a very small business, way less expensive than acquiring the tools of the trade, HW, SW, dictionaries. If you have the competence to do your tax returns, you may be able to get along on your own with only sporadic help from the accounting pro. GFE
