New to Trados, Spell check and accent marks not working

I was convinced by a slick salesman to invest in Trados 2009. Right now it's totally useless, because after a very complicated and stressful time downloading and installing (it literally brought me to tears) I finally am ready to try it out and I can't write in accent marks. What's more, the spell check doesn't work. It just sits there, unavailable in light gray under Tools. Right now it's totally useless, because after a very complicated and stressful time downloading and installing (it literally brought me to tears) I finally am ready to try it out and I can't write in accent marks. What's more, the spell check doesn't work. It just sits there, unavailable in light gray under Tools. I have spent so far about 4 hours trying to fix this through the byzantine SDL website and always end up going around in circles, occasionally finding some article in the knowledge base full of jargon, telling me to download a patch that doesn't work.

I am intelligent. I have mastered other software. I can't figure out why a company devoted to translation and removal of language barriers is SO AWFUL AT COMMUNICATING CLEARLY!!!!!! How do I use this software? I had way better luck at Proz with my installation problems, so my question is: how can I get Trados Studio 2009 to let me use accent marks and spell check- that is- how can I make it even a little bit useful? If you use accent marks like áéíóú, ãõñ, âêîôû ÀÈÌÒÙ .... Aug 11, 2011

... maybe that the problem is not on TRADOS itself, but on the keyboard driver.

Here I am typing on a portuguese keyboard driver:

áéíóú ÁÉÍÓÚ âêîôû ñãõ ÑÃÕ

Now I change it to an English keyboard driver, and then type exactly the same keys:

[a[e[i[o[u [A[E[I[O[U äëïöü 'náó 'NÁÓ

Now, back to portuguese driver.

To install another driver:

Control Panel > Text & Idioms > Keyboard... See more

Now, back to portuguese driver.

To install another driver:

Control Panel > Text & Idioms > Keyboards & Idioms > Change keyboards > Text Services & Input Idioms > Add

and select your preferred idioms. (Since I use brazilian Windows 7 Ultimate, the above path may vary a little on english Windows).

Later you may see at the task bar two letters (e.g. EN - English, PT - portuguese, etc.). Left clicking on them you could do the same change mentioned above.

Thank you! That solved my accent mark problem. I just always used the shortcuts on my English keyboard. Now I have to figure out the spell check shenanigans.

I'm sorry to read your problems here, but pleased Wolf resolved your keyboard problems. I don't know what language pairs you are using but it may be that you have one that is not supported out of the box by Hunspell. These KBs may be useful for you if this is the case:

The supported dictionaries for your language pairs are these so maybe you need to add a different sublanguage to suit:

en_US.dic

es_ES.dic
es_MX.dic
