Discussion

Krzysztof Łesyk May 24, 2010:
Is there a possibility that it's a Korean name written with Chinese characters? I ask since that was my first thought after seeing your other question. Regardless of the answer, I would probably follow cinefil-san's example and ask the person who gave you this job for details.
Yumico Tanaka (X) May 23, 2010:
Japanese names are tricky A funny thing is, we can put any pronunciation to any kanji characters. It's completely free to pronounce any way as you like for your child's name with any kanji character. At least it was the way when I lived there...今もそうだと思いますが。
Joyce A May 23, 2010:
I completely agree with cinefil. When this happens (which is fairly often!), I put in a "tentative" name (in orange) and always inform the agent that there are several possible readings that are correct for that particular name. (I often provide all the other readings in an email to the agent just as added information.) And, I ask the agent to please confirm with the client as to the correct name. These are official documents and, above all, they need to be to be accurate.
Katsushi Saito May 23, 2010:
cinefil May 23, 2010:
I always ask agent/client how to read the name of person.
Since we can't judge it according to the results of google hits

Yoshizo/Yoshizou

Japanese names are very tricky. There are so many ways to correctly read names them as we all know.
Ultimately, I've found it best to confirm with the client.

督造 is also read as the male name “Yoshizo/Yoshizou” from the rules for reading Japanese names.
The below website shows how 督 can be read as “Yoshi” in the front of “given names” for men or women, or at the back of male names.

http://www.geocities.co.jp/SilkRoad-Forest/6130/kanji/jinmei...
よし(人名接頭・男性名接尾)
義・良・慶・芳・佳・由・吉・祥・好・嘉・淑・栄・宜・是・克・恵・美・快・允・叔・能・誉・賀・善・喜・圭・禄・悦・禎・可・斎・儀・欣・至・祉・誉・幹・孔・昌・譲・兆・督など

The names that began with 督 in my “Japanese Names” directory by P.G. O’Neill showed these 3 names only:
督正 = Tadamasa
督応 = Yoshio
督章 = Tadaaki

Also, these were the only “spellings” in the same book when I looked under “Tokuzo” and “Yoshizo”:
Tokuzo = 得三、徳三、徳蔵
Yoshizo = 由蔵、芳蔵、義三

It's always a challenge.
