In an article about whitewater kayaking in a river in Canada, there is a sentence saying,

(The kayaker was) trying a sneaker route around the boil.

In a dictionary, "sneak" means "done without any warning"　（出し抜けの、こっそりと）, but what does this "sneaker route" mean here in a context of kayaking? (easy route? shortcut?)
