Ionic liquid is a substance composed almost entirely of ions at room temperature and near room temperature. It has a unique and superior physical and chemical properties, such as almost no vapor pressure, good performance of thermal and radiation stability, wide liquid range, good solubility to a variety of organic, Inorganic substances, and wide electrochemical window, thus known as green solvent. Ionic liquid will have extensive and important applications in spent nuclear fuel reprocessing technology field.
Currently most reactors use nuclear fuel oxides, mainly uranium dioxide and plutonium dioxide for the fuel element. Spent nuclear fuel residue after nuclear reaction is mostly composed of nuclear fuel oxides, if the spent nuclear fuel is treated in accordance with the traditional method, that is a nitric acid dissolution, it will not only increase the separation costs, but also leave a huge amount of water remaining in the system which will inevitably greatly affect the implementation and effectiveness of electrochemical separation in the later stage.
So in the new ionic liquid based method of spent nuclear fuel reprocessing, first of all, we should consider selectively dissolving these nuclear fuel oxides in ionic liquids, and separate them from high-level radiation waste (fission products (FP) and Minor actinides (MA). Fuel elements such as uranium dioxide have extremely stable chemical properties, therefore dissolving uranium dioxide in ionic liquid is a big challenge that has not been adequately researched. In addition, there is a dearth of research on methods of electrochemical control deposition which separate and purify useful nuclear fuel out of ionic liquid.
