Medical terminology: useful hints on confused terms and pitfalls

Description:Keeping up with the medical terminology is important for both translators and interpreters who want toimprove their knowledge and extend their skills. Besides introducing some commonly confused terms and expressions related to medical conditions, medications, anatomical terms, and much more, this presentation will focus on polysemous terms (a single term with having multiple meanings), false cognates, acronyms and register (in linguistics, a register is a variety of a language used for a particular purpose or in a particular social setting, such as when the doctor is speaking to their peers X speaking to a patient), that can be complex even for the most experienced translators/interpreters who work with medical texts.

Technical translator for about 15 years now. Specialized in medical and dental texts. Translations for a wide range of publishing houses, companies, and websites. Working languages: Portuguese (native), English (source and target), Italian (source), and Spanish (source). Graduated as a dentist and as an oral and maxillofacial traumatologist, and also as a Translator and Interpreter. Ana Julia has published some technical dictionaries and course books of ESP. Master’s degree in Corpus Linguistics. PhD in Translation. Member of the American Translators Association (ATA) and International Medical Interpreters Association (IMIA).

Acquiring medical vocabulary Sep 29, 2015

Last year I thought a good way to familiarize with medical-legal vocabulary would be to take part in a Forensic Medicine introductory course. Do you think is this a correct strategy? What else should I need to specialize in this area? Thanks
