because I often run into problems with Trados and I have to close the document and workbench before I can start working on it again and jump that sentence. There is some kind of invisible character/formatting... that makes Trados insert curly brackets and close the segments.
And stupidly enough, Trados forgets what I've translated since I last saved - don't mind the autosave from Microsoft for Word documents.
So, if I get yet another document that crashes Trados on a (more or less) r... See more because I often run into problems with Trados and I have to close the document and workbench before I can start working on it again and jump that sentence. After every paragraph, but it is also saved automatically every 3 minutes.
Once, maybe it was my second or third translation, I simply forgot to save it, well 85 pages to be rewritten, and you can imagine what it means when you have just a short experience and you don't write as fast as you can do now....

in which case I save almost always after every sentence. I also save more often if I've done a particularly long or difficult paragraph.
If it's any consolation Gianluca, I have had one too many projects crash without saving. Torturous is the word that springs to mind.

+ whenever I remember/after paragraphs, tables or graphs, especially if they needed a lot of precision work.
+ I save a back-up copy (on a memory stick, for instance) twice a day.
+ when the file is particularly long, I email myself a back-up copy at the end of the day... Even if the machine crashes, or the house burns down, I have a copy of my work available on a webmail address.

The document is automatically saved in Word every few minutes, but I also back up to a memory stick two or three times a day (any time I leave my desk for an extended period of time). Like Interlangue, I also email myself long translations when I get well into them and then again every few days.
@Christina - I use WordFast, not Trados, but it sounds like you must have a problem if your programme crashes after each segment. You might consider having an expert take a look at your comp... It's just an automatic motion developed over the years. Essentially, I save whenever I pause from writing, whether it be the end of a sentence, or a paragraph, or to go look up a word in a dictionary on the shelf or take a sip of my coffee.

I also think Christina has a problem, cause one of the points of using a CAT tool is precisely not to have to worry about saving, since it saves for you.
As far as I'm concerned, since I use Trados all the time, I hardly ever save except before closing the document. Though, if the doc has a very complicated formatting that would make it tiresom to run through the TM again, I might save it from time to time too.

Try as I may, after all these years I still lose work from time to time. Lately my computer has been locking up frequently (since one of the new software releases).
I love the idea of e-mailing a copy the file to myself at the end of the day. That's awesome:

Automatically every so often as well as whenever I want to myself, more often if it's an "important" job.
I make a backup of all my most "important" files (Bills, Jobs done, TMs...) occasionally too, just in case...
But really, who's counting?

Luckily it's not after *every* segment but there seem to be some documents with some characters at the start of a segment that makes Trados blow up.
Once it was the case that the spaces between some sentences (2 or 3 in a 2-page document) were formatted in Chinese and I couldn't make Word to change it.

I just do it automatically as I'm working. Then at the end of the day I save everything important to a flash drive. I also love that idea of e-mailing the texts to myself -- very good! I'm going to start doing that for sure.
