Sometimes Dec 12, 2009

If I'm responding to a job offer, I sometimes refer the client to my ProZ profile for more information.

Why should I take potential clients to a website where colleagues do business for half of my prices? (and in some cases re-outsoure for even less?)

For jobs I quote on through the site... Dec 12, 2009

...and usually for other jobs as well.

For quoting on jobs here, I'd just as soon spare myself the effort of going into a long spiel--especially when history suggests that the odds of my offer being accepted are so slim (i.e., since I don't offer bargain basement rates for tough jobs with urgent deadlines)....

I refer to my website, where they can find a direct link to my profile on Proz, in order to receive information which is not available on my website (kudoz activity, WWA....)

Exactly what I thought.
Once I've "hooked" my potential client, why run the risk of letting him shop around and give the job to someone else?

Food for thought Dec 12, 2009

NMR and Alexandra's comments are food for thought as regards potential clients who are not making initial contact through the proz.com portal....

If it's an agency, do you think they don't know of the existence of ProZ and can't search there without your link?

If it's a direct client, I'm sufficiently happy with the site in general and my part in it to feel reasonably sure that they won't now go to the bother of trying to find someone to undercut my quote. If they've already read my letter/email, my CV and my ProZ profile and then they look for someone else, well it was probably inevitable and maybe for the best.

I think clients shouldn't use rates to choose a translator. Dec 12, 2009

I agree, if a client prefers to choose a translator by its fees rather than by its merits, let him do it, instead of trying to get lower charges from me.

Yes, but usually not directly Dec 12, 2009

I often refer my clients to my profile page indirectly. My signature in my emails contains a link to my profile page, so the person reading my marketing email will see the link. It's up to him or her to decide whether to visit my profile or not.

Why not? ProZ offers a good snapshot of the translator. If price is the issue... Dec 12, 2009

...I'd be just as happy they went elsewhere. I've found that clients who want to pay pennies are the most demanding and least appreciate the importance of experience, a body of successful work, and - dare I say it? - native language proficiency.
