Japanese bring a gift (of food, usually) when visiting someone's home.
Originally, when a host serves the gift to the guest, the host says "Omotase de sumimasenga..." (which means "I hope you don't mind my serving what you brought, but please do have some.")
But, recently "Omotase" is also used as a "gift you bring to someone's home".

I also disagree wiht the recent meaning, but this book already mentioned "おもたせ道案内". That's why I added this part.

Conejo-san, in your text it clearly indicated the gift functions both ways (to the giver and to the receiver). It is used differently as the word's traditional usage as many alreday pointed out.
So I took both sides and put it this way.

: 「おもたせ」の本来の意味としては、この解釈は間違いなのだと思いますが、この文脈では、正しいのですね。英語にしてしまえば、「おもたせ」の意味がどうかは関係なく、原文を書いた人が何を伝えたかったかが、正しい意味ということになるのかと思います～。でも、「おもたせ」という言葉について考える良い機会になりました。
