Former Chinese leader Jiang Zemin

Former General Secretary of the Communist Party of China and President of the PRC
I'd go w/just leader unless you have a lot of room for the full title(s).
Peer comment(s):

agree Yasutomo Kanazawa : 江沢民in Japanese, and 江泽民in Chinese.

neutral pikachupichu : Leader has been used only with those with no top class titles like president. A good example is Deng Xiaoping, 邓小平, Chairman of the Central Military Commission. But his role in market economy is great.

Former Chinese President Jiang Zemin

No hairs are being split here: the PRC does indeed have a president, and president is rendered as 主席--or more correctly, 主席 in the case of the PRC is rendered as "president" in English.
Peer comment(s):

agree Michael Karpa : Great references, although I want to agree with Shannon as well...

I initially did, too, but the point is "leader" is ambiguous where 主席 is not. Ken's point is certainly valid, but as the Wiki article he too cites points out, since 1982 主席=president in this context, 大統領 notwithstanding.

日本語 term (edited): 前中国国家主席紅沢民(江沢民 is correct)

Former President (Chairman) of the People's Republic of China Jiang Zeming

Precisely, 主席 has to be translated into Chairman per the evidences. But, President is well accepted in post Mao-Zedong Era.

President's reverse translation is 大統領 in Japanese and 总统 in Simplified Chinese.

If you have a document which Presidency is repeatedly mentioned, it's a good idea that you can Chairman in brackets in the first translated phrase, then you will use only president afterward.
