Discussion

KathyT Aug 28, 2007:
Hi poisonivy - Given this additional context, I can't think of any other possible explanation. I now feel 99% certain that the mother is asking her daughter whether she is gay.
poisonivy (asker) Aug 27, 2007:
Whole conversation between them are;

-You don't... shop round the corner, do you?
-No.
-Because some people think you do. And you see if you got married, they wouldn't.
-Next time someone asks me to marry them, I'll bear that in mind.

Now I am very certain that mother asks her daughter whether she might be gay, and I also tried to Google on it, but I can't confirm this yet. However you've been very helpful, thanks!
KathyT Aug 26, 2007:
not a noun 「お店」. However, now that you have provided a little more of the dialogue, I would say that 'Yes,' she is probably asking her daughter in a roundabout way whether she is gay. Perhaps others will be able to add their opinions here.
KathyT Aug 26, 2007:
I had not heard the slang "shop around the corner" before (although I am not based in the U.K.), nor could I confirm my suspicions about it meaning "gay" on Google. The link snowbees provided above is irrelevant because here, "shop" is a verb 「買い物(を)する」,

Kathy T san Thanks for your reply. Does "shop round the corner" means gay?
Since this daughter has no boyfriend for 35years, and because after these dialogues, mother says;
Because some people think you do. And you see if you got married, they wouldn't.
KathyT Aug 26, 2007:
Oh well, this question is now closed, but the reason I asked for more context to be provided was because my suspicion was that the mother was asking the daughter whether she might be gay.... anyways, good luck with that!
KathyT Aug 26, 2007:
Hello poisonivy-san. Could you please post a little more of the dialogue before and after this sentence? (Especially after....) I think more context is needed to give you an appropriate answer. Thanks!

近場で片付けたらどうなの?

場面に合うかどうかわかりませんが、こんなところでどうでしょう。理想の相手を求めていつまでも高望みしていないで、身近にいる人で誰かいないの? てな感じです。
