どうと思います (Japanese grammar)

日本語 から 英語 芸術/文学 言語学
Somebody asked me which of the following two sentences is correct regarding the use of と. Both seem correct to me and I can't differentiate. Can anybody help?

1. テレビ番組についてどうと思いますか。
2. テレビ番組についてどう思いますか。

What do you think about them?

Your second option (どう思います?)is correct. You should only use the particle と in a case like this to indicate an exact thought, or quote. For example, if you say どうと思います?、what you are really asking is, "Do you think ”どう”?”But since you are asking, "What do you think about them?", then the correct phrase is どう思います? I hope this helps you!

agree Langaid (X) : good point! 'と' functions like 'that' in English, and the phrase #1 sounds like you are saying "What do you think 'that' about TV programs?" Does this make sense?

agree Kurt Hammond : Or, "do you think 'how' about tv programs?" sounds odd. 2 is obviously correct.

agree Mariko Kobayashi : Yes, it has to be No.2. As you/Langaid said this " と" acts like "that" in English.

4 KudoZ points awarded for this answer. Comment: "Thanks to all who replied. Yes, my first hunch was (2) too. But doing a search regarding (1) on google gives me 22 hits too. And these are used by native Japanese. Obviously some Japanese make the same mistake regarding the use of "to". Thanks for clarifying the usage!"

agree Kurt Hammond : Agree. 1. doesnt make any sense and looks like a mistake made by a non-native speaker of Japanese.
