Hallo,
ich habe gestern einen neuen Kunden durch ProZ.com gefunden, der jedoch nur per Scheck zahlen will. Da ich noch nie per Scheck gezahlt habe, habe ich im Internet ein wenig rumgesucht und einige Seiten gefunden, in denen folgendes stand:

Hello Ramona,
How are you doing today? am feeling better today.I just got an email
from my client saying the payment had been sent.I email him your
information,telling him to send your down payment.But there was a
mistake as my client purchase a check payment of euro 3000 of all the
money he owe me on your name which include my medical and traveling
agent fees to you.I don't think there is anything to worry about for
the trust i have in you, you will keep your full payment for the
translation and send the excess funds to my agent.Please watch out for
the payment and let me know when you receive it.
Thanks for your understanding and i hope to hear from you soon.
Denkt ihr, dass es auch sowas ist? Also ich will ehrlich gesagt für den Kunden jetzt nicht arbeiten, da mir das zu gefährlich ist. Der Kunde ist keine Firma, sondern ein Privatkunde. Er hat mir seine Adresse gegeben, die auch im Internet existiert, aber trotzdem glaube ich ihm nicht. Der Scheck wäre in Euro, der Kunde selbst wohnt in Deutschland, aber dessen Kunde wohnt glaube ich in Schweden, so wie ich das verstanden habe.
Was soll ich machen?

Der Scheck ist gefälscht, was sich manchmal erst nach Wochen herausstellt, da die Bank ihn zunächst einmal gutschreibt.

danke für Ihre sofortige Antwort.
Was soll ich denn machen, wenn der Scheck ankommt? Einfach wegschmeißen?
Mir kam es schon von Anfang an komisch vor, weil der Mann zwar in Deutschland gemeldet ist, in Deutschland wohnt, aber immer mit mir Englisch spricht. Außerdem hat er mir gleich in seiner ersten Nachricht erzählt, dass er Krebs hat und deshalb ins Ausland reisen musste, um dort behandelt zu werden. Da kam mir das schon komisch vor.

Ich würde zur Polizei gehen....es handelt sich eindeutig um einen versuchten Betrug. Solchen Leuten muss das Handwerk gelegt werden!

Ich bin ganz Kathis Meinung. Nur wenn du die Polizei einbeziehst, kann dem Mann das Handwerk gelegt werden. Die Polizei kann dir auch sicherlich am besten sagen, wie du weiter vorgehen sollst.

Yes, that's him! He posted a project for a medical translation from English to German.
Fred Dinse is his name. He is a real person, he sent me his address which is also written in the telephone book. He sent me the same message! But he told me that deadline is Saturday.
Okay, I'll just ignore.

A Fred Dinse might exist, but this scammer who is sitting in some unmentionable part of the world is certainly not "the" Fred Dinse.
This kind of scam is well known. Your clue is always the offer to pay via cheque, the gmail account, a dead parent or a dying (from cancer) person.

Ich hatte vor ungefähr einem Jahr so einen ähnlichen Fall und habe dem "Kunden" dann geschrieben, dass ich die Übersetzung erst machen werde, wenn der Scheck bei mir angekommen ist. Als der Scheck da war, habe ich ihn sofort zu meiner Bank gebracht und dort prüfen lassen und, wie zu erwarten war, war es eine Fälschung.
Das mit der Anzeige dürfte schade um die Zeit sein, da die Bande sowieso aus dem Ausland operiert und wir nur die deutsche Polizei unnötig beschäftigen.

Und falls es sich bei Deinem Kunden doch um einen ehrlichen Menschen handelt, wird er sicher Verständnis dafür haben, dass Du die ÜBersetzung erst beginnst, wenn er Dir das Honorar überweisen hat.
Ich würde an Deiner Stelle auf keinen Fall mit der Übersetzung beginnen.

So I know for sure now, that it is a scam. But is there anything that could be done about that??? So far I still did not respond to his email....

Ein pikantes Detail ist, dass ich nie eine Abmachung über eine Anzahlung mit Fred Dinse getroffen habe, also "downpayment" in meinem Fall gar keinen Sinn macht (wahrscheinlich ist er vor lauter potentiellen Betrugsopfern dann bei mir "aus dem Takt" gekommen und hat die betreffende Vorlage mit der Anzahlungs-E-Mail vergessen, auch an mich zu schicken).
Übrigens: Vielen herzlichen Dank an alle vorigen "Poster", ohne euch wäre ich - trotz Zweifels - vielleicht darauf reingefallen. ▲ Collapse

I once had a similar request - a German businessman, supposedly in Sweden, who only wrote to me in (bad) English. I checked the IP address of the mails he sent me from "Sweden" and lo and behold, they came from Lagos, Nigeria. I'm guessing that's where yours will have come from too.

Passiert immer wieder: Jemand klaut den Namen einer realen Person, legt sich mit diesem Namen eine E-Mail-Adresse zu und veröffentlicht eine Ausschreibung bei ProZ. Sehr leicht daran zu erkennen, dass es immer sehr viele Wörter sind und kaum was zum Inhalt gesagt wird, und dass es sich um eine Privatperson handelt, deren vollständige Postadresse angegeben wird.
Wenn du nett bist, schreibst du dem richtigen Fred Dinse eine kurze Mail und informierst ihn darüber, dass jemand mit s...
