出版翻訳の手順

初めまして。
アメリカで出版されている本の著者が、日本語翻訳者を探していると知り合いから聞いたのでコンタクトをとってみると、出版社を探すところからやってほしいと言われました。
ほかの言語にはすでに複数翻訳されているそうですので、エージェントなどを通してやればいいのにと思いますが。。。

出版翻訳の経験がないものですから、どのように進めていけばいいか、それとも断った方がいいか、考えています。
やるとしたらまずはシノプシスを作成して日本の出版社に送るところから始めるものと思いますが、その場合、著者に料金を請求するのが普通でしょうか。とすると相場はおいくらくらいでしょう。

どなたかアドバイスしていただけましたら有難く存じます。よろしくお願いします。
