They just stopped replying completely, disregarded every request/email/call.

Currently waiting for my review to be visible, I'd give them 0 star if possible.

https://www.proz.com/blueboard/52459

Since I haven't had this fraud issue before in my life, I need a community help - where and how to begin with a legal action? Since the amount is less than 1000 EUR, I'd like to do it myself, without lawyer's intervention.

Can you help me with the first steps, and is it worth it? I would gladly visit that scam/fraud office myself, but I'm in another country.

Thank you

Complementing what Josephine said, every time I had a non-payment issue, Proz staff has always been very helpful. You should open a non-payment report (https://help.proz.com/how-to-open-a-non-payment-report) or send a support ticket together with all the data regarding your non-payment issue. Good luck!

I know there's not much point crying over spilt milk, but did you check this agency before accepting the job?

First thing you see when you get on their profile page is a 'Note from site staff' dated July 22, 2020, 4:53 am that there is another agency of the same name.

When you check its 'twin's' profile, the first thing you see is a pop-up saying 'This outsourcer has been banned from posting jobs at ProZ.com' all the way back in April 6, 2017, 11:13 am.... See more

I find it rather unbelievable that if an agency gets banned from posting jobs on Proz it still can come back under a new profile, and start again posting jobs even if Proz.com knows of its links with the banned agency!

'... but I'm in another country' - scammers adore that! 'Another continent' is even better for them.

If you know who is the end-user / final client, you can also contact them and inform them that YOU still own the copyright as you haven’t been paid, and as the agency is actively ignoring you, you intend to send them the invoice including penalties for late payment.

ProZ is the true problem here Apr 29

Dear Maria Teresa and dear Daryo,

Yes, I contacted Proz.com staff a week ago but still no reply. And I agree with Daryo, there should be more security on Proz. We're paying this for nothing. There should be a debt collect department.
This thing with the copyright sounds great, it didn't occur to me. Great tip.

Yes, I checked the Blueboard but seems I did it very quick and superficially because all I remember was a grade 4 for the company, which sounded "not bad" to me at the time.
Look at me now...

Probably it's to late to take any actions, you say it's from last year.
Anyway I have to agree with you that we are sitting ducks here on ProZ.
Every once in a while there's an attempt for fraud.

The statute of limitations for commercial debts in most EU countries is at least 2-3 years, so I doubt that it's already too late. But recovery action should be started as soon as possible.

Well, in that case, good luck.

I'm sorry you had to go through that Apr 30

Sometimes we try to analyze the situation from every possible perspective, but the scam still happens. In an ideal world, we would never have to worry about that.
I remember my time as an ESL teacher, we used to have problems with parents who wouldn't pay the monthly fees. The school closed down for unrelated reasons, but I believe the principal still had problems with those clients.
I can't help with legal advice, but my heart goes out to you.

Good luck.

What a comparison? Wow, parents and scammers? Maybe they didn't had money to pay your company right away, maybe they wanted extension.
There're more important things for some parents and children than education, you know. Prioritizing.

And what did you decide, to revenge those parents that didn't have money to pay for theirs children education?

If you are asking me, education should be free for all.

And by the way Brazil is like country with most scammers online, next to India and China.
