relevance? Jan 31, 2011

I don't think this is appropriate for Proz's translation news. What does it have to do with translating?

The translator apparently specialises in translating Manga comics and it's his source material he's been convicted for. So yes, it does relate to translation

Look again:
Sweden’s Court of Appeal upheld a conviction against a 37-year-old translator of manga, on possession of child pornography. The court upheld the lower court’s ruling on 39 images as child pornography. None of the images depicted real children.

One can generate a lot out debate from this news item.

1. One aspect is the different ideas different societies have about what is acceptable and what is not, and particularly how a translator walks the line between the two.
2. It also highlights the skewed values of society as a whole. A translator who gets caught with material that offends a government with unpopular political views is called a hero, whereas a translator who gets caught with material that offends a government with unpopular moral views is vilified.
3. In some countries, the reason why child pornography is illegal is to protect children from exploitation, but clearly that is not the case here -- no children were involved.
4. One can also wonder about whether these images were truly (a) of children and (b) pornographic. It is manga, after all.
5. Finally one wonders whether the images were privately collected or even drawn, or possibly part of a commission from a client (since he does specialise in manga). What is legal in Japan may not be legal in Sweden. If these files did come from a client, then the translator is not "at fault" unless he kept the images for his own perverted enjoyment (or is he?).

I agree with Samuel Feb 5, 2011

I also note that the client has disassociated itself with the translator by ending its working relationship with him.
